What Are QR Codes?
QR codes (Quick Response codes) were invented in 1994 by Denso Wave, a subsidiary of Toyota, to track vehicle parts during manufacturing. The technology quickly spread beyond automotive and is now used worldwide for everything from payments to restaurant menus.
Unlike traditional barcodes that hold only a few dozen characters, QR codes can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters, making them versatile enough for URLs, contact information, Wi-Fi credentials, and much more.
Disclaimer: QR code technology was invented by Denso Wave, Inc. and is used under open license. qr.vu is not affiliated with Denso Wave. We provide QR code generation, customization, and analytics services built on top of this publicly available technology. “QR Code” is a registered trademark of Denso Wave Incorporated.
Why QR Codes Matter Today
Contactless Interactions
The pandemic accelerated adoption. Menus, payments, and check-ins are now touchless.
Bridging Physical & Digital
Print media, packaging, and signage connect directly to digital experiences.
Measurable Engagement
Unlike print ads, dynamic QR codes let you track exactly who scanned, when, and where.
Universal Compatibility
Every modern smartphone camera can read QR codes natively — no app needed.
